Foreword
We didn’t set out to write a research paper, nor did we intend to compile another glossy guidebook filled with top ten sights and travel tips. This book was born quietly, in the midst of ordinary days and quiet conversations, shaped by the countless small moments that marked our three years in Azerbaijan — the Land of Fire. What began as a straightforward relocation slowly unfolded into something deeper: a journey of unexpected wonder, growing admiration, and a profound respect for a place many still couldn’t point to on a map.
One could ski through snow-draped mountains in the north, or float in the warm, subtropical waters of the Caspian Sea. There are rumbling mud volcanoes to stand beside, their breath rising from the earth like something primordial, and silent village roads to walk where time itself seems to hesitate. These are just glimpses of what Azerbaijan offers — not in loud declarations, but in quiet invitations. It reveals itself not all at once, but in layers: delicate, surprising, and unforgettable.
This book is not a comprehensive guide, nor a catalogue of every landmark or monument. Rather, it is a personal tapestry woven from moments — a collection of encounters, fragments of conversation, and scenes quietly observed in places most maps overlook. During our time in Azerbaijan, we came to realise that life here is not measured by possessions, but by the richness of connection: the generosity of a neighbor, the stillness of a mountain morning, the warmth of a shared table. It is a place where meaning is often found not in the grand or the planned, but in the quiet moments that stay with you, long after the journey has ended.
Have we seen it all? Certainly not. Even after three years of exploring on nearly every free weekend, there are still countless roads we never turned down, villages we only passed through, and stories we never heard. Azerbaijan is a mosaic — a land stitched together with contrasts, full of surprises that resist being rushed. It asks for time, for patience, for curiosity. What we share in these pages is not the whole picture, but a handful of pieces — moments that, together, form our own small corner of the puzzle.
If you’ve picked up this book wondering whether Azerbaijan is worth a visit, let us answer without hesitation: yes. A week — even ten days — won’t be enough, but it will be a beginning. A glimpse into a country that waits patiently for the curious to arrive, not with fanfare, but with quiet dignity and open arms. Our hope is that these pages stir something in you — a sense of wonder, a flicker of adventure — and that, one day, you’ll find yourself here, writing your own story beneath the same sky.
Initially, I had reservations about living in Azerbaijan, unsure of what to expect. But over time, the country quietly grew on me—its warmth, culture, and rhythm of life gradually weaving themselves into my daily experience. What once felt foreign became familiar, and leaving now feels like parting from something deeply personal.
May the Land of Fire ignite something within you too.
